Although usually referred to as Sandhamn, the island is in fact called Sandön and Sandhamn is the name of the port at the northern end of the island. However, Sandhamn is the name most people are familiar with, not least due to the author, Stieg Larsson, choosing to feature the island as the main 'getaway' for his character, Mikael Blomkvist, in the Millennium Series of books!
The island has a lovely harbour which has been popular with seafarers since the 18th century and attracts large numbers of yachts of all shapes and sizes to its popular regattas. There is also a picturesque village centre which is a haven of narrow alleyways, winding streets and overgrown verandahs and is home to numerous cosy bars, some of which offer the opportunity to join an 'after sail' get together as the sun goes down.
For those who choose to spend their time on the water, there are a number of water based activities including RIB boat safaris, sea kayaking, fishing and boat rental plus the island also has several beautiful long, sandy beaches perfect for a relaxing day in the sun with a picnic. In addition, our featured hotel, Seglarhotellet, has a magnificent spa with a broad selection of relaxing treatments guaranteed to relax both the body and mind.
