The geographical location of East Greenland, known

locally as ´Tunu´ means the village of Kulusuk and the

town of Tasiilaq are relatively isolated in relation to the

rest of Greenland.

East Greenland is the perfect destination if you want to experience traditional Greenlandic culture. Old traditions are still very much alive in East Greenland; during the winter, hunting trips with dog sledges (several weeks in duration) are still common and many families choose to live in isolated areas so as to maximize their hunting opportunities for seals and polar bears. The deserted location has resulted in a special East Greenlandic dialect and protected their original culture from western influence - even more so than in other parts of Greenland. Actually it is only little more than 100 years ago that the first Europeans ´discovered´ this area!

During spring it is possible to cross the Ammasalik island on dogsledge. The trip terminates at the small isolated settlement of Tinitegilaaq at the mouth of the Sermilik Icefjord where icebergs float by all year.
