The Lofoten Islands are part of the beautiful archipelago

in Norway’s north west, beyond the Arctic Circle, whose

mystical beauty has inspired writers and artists for many

years.

Since 1828 the main industry of the islands has been commercial fishing, particularly for the cod which migrate from the Barents Sea to spawn here, where the coldness of the water is tempered by the Gulf Stream. Visitors to the islands will be enthralled by the magnificent bird colonies in the south to the stretches of golden beaches and fjords in the north.

The approach to the islands on-board the Hurtigruten vessel offers a marvellous view of the towering peaks of the Lofoten Wall, the 160 kilometre stretch of mountains, and the picturesque fishing villages which hug the shoreline.

The raw beauty of the islands and the peace and tranquillity they offer presents a delightful contrast to the hustle and bustle of the Arctic capital city, Tromsø.
