Stavanger, situated on the southwest coast, is Norway's

4th largest city.

The city is a combination of new and old with a magnificent water front and Norway's oldest cathedral, Stavanger domkirke. Modern Stavanger offers a great selection of shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants and has a lively, vibrant feel.

Gamle (Old) Stavanger comprises 173 wooden buildings from the turn of the 18th century; most of them small, white,  picturesque cottages alongside galleries and handicraft boutiques. It is also here that you will find The Canning Museum (1890s - approx. 1960) which provides an insight into what, historically, was Stavanger's chief source of employment, the working conditions of the canning factories and the environment. On the first Sunday of the month, (also Tuesdays and Thursdays during high season), the smoking ovens are lit and visitors can taste freshly smoked fish right from the oven.

The Norwegian Petroleum Museum is situated right on the harbour front and is a museum for everyone. Its' exhibits explain how oil and gas are created, discovered and produced, and what they are used for. The museum also provides information about technological advances and the way petroleum influences Norwegian society. A fascinating way to spend a few hours followed by a snack in the museum's cafe, Bølgen & Moi.

There are many excursion possibilities to fill your time in Stavanger, the most popular two being a cruise on the Lysefjord and a trip to the top of the Pulpit Rock with magnificent views across the fjord.
