A stroll through old Bryggen facing the harbour, with its wooden buildings and pointed gables provides a unique example of Norwegian medieval architecture. The old buildings house many fascinating shops, arts and crafts centres, restaurants, cafes and bars as well as the Hanseatic Museum depicting life from medieval times to the late 18th century. The harbour itself with its intriguing fish, fruit and flower market, where the locals can select their fish live, is always a centre of great interest.
Bergen Aquarium is located on the outermost point of Nordnes, with a delightful view over the approach to the port of Bergen. Seals and penguins playing in the large pools welcome you to the Aquarium that has one of Europe's largest collections of fish and invertebrates. One million litres of clean seawater are pumped up from a depth of 130 meters, allowing one of the few aquariums in the world to keep a shoal of herring. Ino Caprino's inique film about strange and wonderful world below sea level can be viewed in the 225 degrees super-video graph.
For magnificent views over the city and surrounding islands take the funicular railway to the summit of Mount Fløyen then stroll back down to Bergen comfortably in an hour. Bergen was also home of Edvard Grieg, Norway's most famous composer. A visit to his house 'Troldhaugen' is one of many excursion possibilities, as is the renowned excursion 'Norway in a Nutshell' which includes the Flåm Mountan Railway, a boat trip along the Nærøyfjord and the climb of Stalheim Gorge.
Bergen is also the main shopping centre for western Norway with excellent shops and department stores.
