Ilulissat is a modern Greenlandic town famous for its icebergs, indeed the word Ilulissat means ‘iceberg’ in Greenlandic. The town is situated at the mouth of the 40 kms long ice fjord which is filled with enormous icebergs produced by the northern hemisphere’s most productive glacier. This unique nature and beauty has resulted in Ilulissat Icefjord being listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Qeqertarsuaq on the Disko Bay is situated in beautiful surroundings at the base of a high basalt field that originates from a lava flow, millions of years old. The volcanoes are inactive but there are still hundreds of hot springs on the island that give the island a unique flora and fauna. Because of these natural phenomenon Copenhagen University has a research station in Qeqertasuaq which today appears like a living museum. A hike to the top of the mountain is rewarded by a fantastic view of Disko Bay and the icebergs of Ilulissat 100 kms away. Whales can often be seen playing in the sea close to the shores.
