To experience Lake Vänern, is to enjoy the largest

lake in Western Europe. It resides in Sweden’s

agricultural heartland; surrounded by lush forest

it provides the perfect backdrop to explore

Mother Nature.

This motoring route first takes you across to Gränna, along Vättern, Sweden’s second largest lake, where rumour has it, lives a mythological sea creature. You will then travel to Karlstad built on the river delta where Sweden’s longest river, Klarälven, runs into Lake Vänern. With an abundance of water surrounding the city there is plenty of opportunity to rent a boat and spend time along the river.

During the second half of the tour you escape to the beautiful west coast of Sweden where you are free to explore scenic landscapes, cultural attractions and quaint coastal villages. We recommend the fishing resort of Fjällbacka, which was home to actress Ingrid Bergman, and has recently been put on the literary map after Swedish crime writer Camilla Läckberg, used the village as the setting to her novels.

The finale of this exquisite tour heads to Gothenburg, Sweden’s second largest city and popularly known as the City of Culture and Culinary Capital. Steeped in historic and new buildings; from magnificent 17th century fortresses to the contemporary Opera House which overlooks the waterfront, Gothenburg has an appealing ability at mixing old with new seamlessly, whilst serving a circuit of streets weaving beautifully among canals and tree lined avenues.

Day 1

Arrive Gothenburg Landvetter Airport. Collect your hire car from the Avis Office at the airport and drive inland, towards Jönköping and the southern end of Lake Vänern. Continue alongside the lake to the eastern side and the picturesque village of Gränna.

2 nights GRÄNNA - Amalias Hus (BB)

Day 3

Continue your journey northwards alongside the lake to Örebro where you will now bear westwards to the northern tip of Lake Vättern, Sweden's largest lake, and the popular seaside town of Karlstad.

2 nights KARSLSTAD - Clarion Collection Hotel Bilan (BB)

Day 5

Depending on the weather, and inclination, you now have the option to take a full day and drive out to the West Coast, perhaps beginning in the popular summer resort of Strömstad which is just over the border from Norway, and meander slowly southwards via Grebbestad and Fjällbacka to Ljungskile. Alternatively you may choose to follow the western shores of Lake Vänern via Säffle and Mellerud and explore the West Coast at a more leisurely pace during a day trip. Both options offer lovely scenery and plenty worth stopping for.

2 nights LJUNGSKILE - Villa Sjötorp (BB)

Day 7

Continue southwards on the main route E6 into Gothenburg. Leave your hire car at the Avis Office in downtown Gothenburg.

1 night GOTHENBURG - Elite Park Avenue Hotel (BB)
