Few towns can rival Alesund’s history and landscape. If you had seen Alesund during the night of 23 January 1904, as it burnt entirely to the ground, you would hardly be able to believe that this now stunning Art Nouveau town was born from devastation. The reconstruction of the town started immediately by a team of bright, young architects all under the age of 35. By 1907 the town was entirely complete and hailed the world’s most modern town, and little has changed over the last 100 years as the town still looks uniquely innovative and fresh – a testimony to the success of the town’s reconstruction.

For a guaranteed evening of decadent food and appealing atmosphere The Brosundet Hotel is the place to stay and dine – it’s praised for being the best fish restaurant in Alesund and after one mouthful of the pan fried cod, layered on a bed of creamy mash and duck con fit it’s easy to see why. But the town is home to many high quality hotels, and you’ll be more than satisfied with the Clarion Collection Hotel Bryggen and Quality Hotel Waterfront.
Frosted glass shower makes quite a sexy statement in the Brosundet hotel room!
All visitors to Alesund must make the short trek up to the Kniven viewpoint, once there you will be graced by the Alesund panorama which is an unforgettable sight – clusters of brightly coloured buildings surrounded by a 360 ° view of the Atlantic Ocean, and the Sunnmøre Alps. The most exhilarating way to explore the offshore wildlife is by RIB Boat Safari where on a choppy day you’ll really feel the strength of the current beneath your boat. Another hotspot is the Atlantic Ocean Park, an impressive aquarium that encourages all visitors to interact with the North Atlanic’s undersea world.

There are so many different facets of Alesund that it is an ideal place to come for a short city break – cosmopolitan meets countryside, and heritage and modernity exist together. It is best visited in the summer months, when a relaxed atmosphere comes out to play and the maritime climate and wildlife flourishes.
