Vacations to Greenland

A vacation to Greenland, is an opportunity to see a country of great beauty.

Greenland is the world's largest island, and a large area of it is covered by the second largest icecap in the world. In the south outside the reaches of the icecap there are historic towns and settlements filled with wonderful architecture and culture. Vacations to Greenland are becoming increasingly popular as those who have experienced the many wanders of this country spread the word.

5 things you may want to know about Greenland:

1. There around 56,000 people living in Greenland
2. The icecap on Greenland covers almost 1,800,000 square kilometres
3. In some places the icecap is up to 3km deep
4. Greenland is still part of Denmark, but has been self-governing since 1979
5. The population of Greenland are mainly Inuit or Eskimo

Greenland’s icecap is approximately 14 times the size of England, and with its fabulous mountains, huge icebergs, amazing glaciers and beautiful green countryside, Greenland is a vacation worth considering.

Legend has it that Erik the Red, the Norwegian Viking, named Greenland. According to the stories after living in Greenland for three years he returned to Iceland to convince his fellow countrymen of the many opportunities to start a new life in 'the green land'.

Greenland boasts a variety of wildlife, with thousands of reindeer, musk oxen, walrus, artic foxes, arctic hares and, of course, the mighty polar bear. Bird watchers can admire the white-tailed eagle, whilst the marine life around the island includes giants such as blue fin sperm whales.

Vacations in Southern Greenland

Southern Greenland is greener and more fertile, with a much milder climate than the north. The landscape is dramatic with giant glaciers cutting through the land, mighty icebergs floating in the fjords, and lush meadows and green valleys leading to awesome mountain slopes.

As part of your vacation to Greenland why not visit the hot springs and bathe in waters up to 36 degrees centigrade, a must for someone wanting to relax. What better way to relax, than floating in a hot spring whilst taking in the breathtaking views of the ice floes on the sea.

The ice flow is a phenomenon unique to South Greenland. Unlike an iceberg, ice floes are large sheets of frozen saltwater up to three metres thick, which are constantly moving.
And for those who like to enjoy man-made beauty as well as natures own, a vacation in Greenland can take in the many historic churches and farms from over 500 years of Scandinavian settlements.
