What are the Northern Lights?
The Northern lights, or aurora borealis, are one of
the most unusual and amazing sites on earth. Over the
centuries they have been parts of myths, superstitions
and fairy tales, as so often things of natural beauty
are.
The Inuit once believed that the Northern Lights were
the spirits that are in heaven lighting the way for
new arrivals. And in the middle-ages Europeans thought
they were breath of soldiers who gave their lives for
king and country and now continued their fight in heaven.
The reality is no less wonderful and thought provoking.
The northern lights are actually caused by the sun’s
surfacing throwing particles know as solar winds out
in to space. When this solar wind collides with the
earths atmosphere their energy is transferred to light,
and it is this light which causes the aurora borealis.

Where can I see the Northern Lights?
The Northern Lights can on occasions be seen as far
south as Scotland, but to have a much better chance
you really need to travel much further north. As you
move within the artic circle the regularity, intensity
and duration increases.
Holidays to Northern Norway, Finland, Lapland and Greenland
offer some of the best views of the Northern Lights
and much more besides. Breaks to the ice hotels are
an experience not to be missed, and also offer a great
chance to see the Northern Lights, as do our breaks
to Spitsbergen.
How often can you see the Northern Lights?
In parts of the artic circle the Northern Lights can
been seen clearly every other night, if not even more
frequently. In Spitzbergen, the Northern Lights are
a regular sight. From southern Norway, sightings may
be reduced to a couple of times a month, whilst in central
Europe they will be visible only a handful of times
each year.
The Northern Lights are often associated with the
winter months, though they are in fact present all year
round. However they are much clearer in the darker winter
months. They are also best views away from artificial
lighting, such as street lights, and away from coastal
regions where there is often cloud cover.
The optimum times of year to see the Northern Lights
in their full glory is between September and April,
but why not talk to our experts at Taber Holidays, where
we will be able to help you plan the trip of a lifetime.
