Stockholm is Sweden's lovely capital city, beautifully situated over 14 islands and connected by 57 bridges.
The city is full of charm and atmosphere, old and new, and a guided city tour is a good introduction to the sights including Skansen, the open-air museum with over 150 buildings from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries; the Vasa Museum, home of the warship Vasa sunk during its maiden voyage in 1628 and City Hall, an imposing building and site of the Nobel Prize Awards Ceremony.
We recommend a stroll around the cobbled streets of the Old Town 'Gamla Stan', steeped in historical heritage with relics from as early as the 13th Century. This area has much to offer with its many souvenir and antique shops, elegant palaces, churches and museums. In comparison Stockholm City or 'new' Stockholm, offers larger department stores, shopping malls, exclusive boutiques and bustling nightlife. There are many delightful cafes to sample during the day and a wonderful selection of bars and restaurants for the evening.
Stockholm´s archipelago begins just outside the city limits and is made up of no less than 24,000 islands. Scheduled boat trips can be made to the islands and provide a break to the hustle and bustle of the city. |
