Norway has a very rich history, with a record of the

first human settlements dating back 11,000 years.

The Viking Age, between 800 and 1066, continues to be the period in history most associated with Norway, raiding every seaboard from the Shetlands to Sicily, even venturing as far as Greenland and Newfoundland. However, despite periods of repression under the Danes and the Swedes, Norwegian history and culture holds much interest; this is, after all, the country with a tiny population that produced painters, writers and musicians such as Munch, Ibsen and Grieg, and the explorers Amundsen and Nansen.

In keeping with our featured historical destinations we have also selected historical hotels, full of character and famed not only for their place in history but also their standard of food and service.

Needless to say, the journeys between resorts take in much of southern Norway’s most breathtaking scenery and historical sites.
