A grand tour of Greenland including beautiful and

fertile South Greenland, the capital city Nuuk and

Ilulissat, the town of the icebergs.

Qaqortoq is the biggest town in South Greenland, situated near Lake Storesøen with rising mountains as a backdrop. From the town's beginnings, old Qaqortoq was concentrated around the square and it's here that you'll find the town's oldest house from 1804, which has now been turned into a museum with an impressive exhibition of works by local artists and other items illustrating Greenlandic culture. At the town's meeting point on the main square, there's a very decorative fountain where you can relax in the sun and enjoy a cup of coffee and watch children fishing for trout in the river. It's also the site of Greenlandic artist Hans Lynge's beautiful bronze sculpture of a Greenlandic woman.

Nuuk is Greenland's largest town and the capital. It is a wonderful mix of modern civilisation and tradition, and has a beautiful hinterland and an enormous complex of fjords which are worth visiting by land, water or air. The area near the colonial harbour in the old quarter of Nuuk is a good place to start exploring. The statue of Hans Egede stands on a hilltop looking out over the sea. From this hilltop there's a lovely view of the fjord and the town, and during the summer the view from the statue is unrivalled, and when sitting gazing out to sea, you may be lucky enough to spot whales. Nuuk's beautiful red wooden cathedral is just below. Nuuk is also home to the Greenland National Museum.

Ilulissat is known as the town of the giant icebergs and home of the UNESCO designated Ilulissat Ice Fjord. This is the third largest town in Greenland and a really big city where modern life meets old fashioned lifestyle - all surrounded by amazing nature. Here, ice is the main theme; get close to the icy giants covered in the rays of the midnight sun on an amazing Ice Fjord cruise, join a full day boat excursion to the calving glacier, Eqip Sermia or discover the full length of the ice filled Kangia Ice Fjord on a helicopter trip flying in low altitude over the fjord. You can also vist some of the remote settlements where fishing and hunting still provide a living for most people.
