Hot steam from open craters, bubbling hot springs, and dramatic landscapes make this area unique. Þingvellir National Park (UNESCO), site of the world’s oldest parliament, is also close by. Here you can see the rift between the European and North American tectonic plates upon which Iceland sits and which are moving apart 2 cm per year.
The lovely coastal village of Vik is situated south of Iceland’s largest glacier, Myrdalsjökull, and is famous for its black, basaltic sands and the Reynisdrangar needles (Troll Rocks) - 66 m high rocks, rising from the sea. Nearby is Dyrholæy, Iceland’s most southerly tip or cape, 120 m high, where a unique arch-shaped rock is found, through which boats and planes can pass. Dyrholæy is also a protected nature reserve for numerous large seabird colonies including puffins, fulmars and razorbills.
