A true, 'picture postcard' winter wonderland

in Finnish Lapland.

Muotkan Maja Wilderness Lodge is situated at Kakslauttanen on the Saariselkä fells on the edge of Finland's Urho Kekkonen National Park. This beautiful area is home to an impressive collection of wildlife including bears, wolverines and golden eagles as well as thousands of grazing reindeer, owned and herded by the local Sami population.

This fantastic adventure holiday includes snowmobiling and dog sledding along with a visit to a local reindeer farm to meet Sami herders who tell you about their life and the importance of the reindeer. Quiet, relaxing evenings are geared very much towards searching for the Northern Lights, maximising your opportunity of spotting them during your stay. Certainly the remoteness of this destination (although only 12 kms from Saariselkä resort) guarantees little light pollution from street lighting or any other lighting come to that and increases your chances even further.......

Day 1 - Arrive Finnish Lapland plus Aurora Camp

Fly from London Heathrow Airport to Ivalo (via Helsinki). Met on arrival at the aiport by your hosts from Muotkan Maja Wilderness Lodge. Transfer to the lodge. Duration approximately 30 minutes.

Check-in at the hotel followed by dinner served in the hotel's restaurant.

At 2100 we depart for our first night of Aurora viewing. A cosy, heated cabin with hot drinks and snacks makes your Northern Lights viewing even more enjoyable and comfortable. Return to the hotel around 0100.

Your buffet breakfast is served in the hotel's restaurant and is followed by the following day's activities:

You will learn how to lasso a reindeer and also have a short reindeer sleigh drive. Lunch is served in the reindeer herder's camp. We will drive with snowmobiles approximately 30 kms during the day (duration of programme approx 4-5 hours).

Dinner and a sauna at the hotel.

Aurora Hunting in the Fell
Now it's time to head out again into the darkness to search for the Northern Lights up on the fells which have an open view of the sky. The optimum time for viewing the celestial light show is between 11pm and 1am so you'll leave the hotel at about 10pm and return at approximately 1am.

Day 3 - Husky Safari & Northern Lights Snowshoe Searching

After breakfast it's time to go for a husky safari. You will visit a husky farm where you meet the huskies and take a short drive of approximately 1.5 hours. Muotkan Maja Wilderness Lodge ***

Situated in Finnish Lapland at Kakslauttanen on the edge of the Urho K Kekkonen National Park. The lodge was formerly owned by the Post Office as a retreat for postal workers and for meetings and get togethers. The Lodge is of a simple standard with 11 twin bedded rooms in the main building all having shower and WC. There is a large dining room which serves traditional Lappish dishes and a cafe serving soup lunches, pancakes, home made bakery products and snacks. There is also a small lounge area for relaxation and a hotel sauna that is heated daily for guests and is included in your stay.
