Colourful houses surrounded by fjords and the

Sunnmore Alps: Ålesund has got to be one of the

most beautiful places in the world.

But what makes Ålesund's beauty even more unique is that in 1904 the town was completely destroyed by fire leaving 10,000 people homeless. The German Emperor. Kaiser Wilhelm ll, offered his help and provided supplies in order that the town could be re-built. And it was, by architects who had trained in Germany and designed the new town in the characteristic Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) style. Buildings decorated with turrents, spires and garagoyles, particularly along Kongensgata, give the town an almost fairy-tale atmosphere and visitors should definately visit Jugendstil Art Nouveau Centre, situated in the old chemist's shop, with exhibits showing how the town was rebuilt following the fire and more about the Jugendstil style. A 1½ hour guided town walk operates daily for those who want to learn more about Art Nouveau heritage.

Attractions includ: the Kniven viewpoint, reached by climbing the 418 steps up Aksla from the town centre to the Fjellstua Kafe at the top; Sunnmøre Museum, site of over 50 relocated traditional buildings depicting life between 11th and 16th centuries; Atlantic Ocean Park, the wonderful aquarium introducing visitors to the North Atlanic's undersea world and the astonishing richness of coastal and fjord submarine life; and the bird island of Runde, where millions of sea birds inculding Puffins, Guillemots, Razorbills and Skuas nest each year. A 2½ hours boat trip also offers the opportunity to view seals.

The town has a bustling shopping centre and selection of bars, cafes and excellent restuarants; certainly enough to keep any ardent 'city-breaker' happy and wishing they had more time. For more things to do in Ålesund, please visit our blog!
