Greenland Holidays

A holiday to Greenland, the world's largest island, opens up a world of unique natural beauty.

Much of Greenland is dominated by the world’s second largest icecap, yet in the south where the ice does not cover the land there are wonderful towns and settlements filled with history and culture. As a holiday destination Greenland is still relatively unknown, but to those who have experienced its many wonders, it is a place they will never forget.

5 facts you may not know about Greenland:

  1. Greenland’s icecap covers almost 1.8 million square kilometres
  2. The icecap is three kilometers deep in some places
  3. Greenland is still part of Denmark, but has been self-governing since 1979
  4. The population of Greenland is around 56,000
  5. The population of Greenland are mainly Inuit or Eskimo

Greenland is an amazing holiday destination. There are giant icebergs, peaked mountains, beautiful green countryside and dramatic glaciers. Greenland's icecap alone is 14 times the size of England.

According to the stories Greenland was actually named by the Norwegian Viking, Erik the Red. After living in Greenland for three years he returned to Iceland to convince his fellow countrymen of the many opportunities for starting a new life in 'the green land'.

Greenland has a rich and varied range of animals, with thousands of reindeer, musk oxen, walrus, artic foxes, arctic hares and, of course, the mighty polar bear. The skies are controlled by the white-tailed eagle and the surrounding seas by marine giants such as the blue fin sperm whales.

Holidays in Southern Greenland

Southern Greenland has the mildest climate and is greener and more fertile. The landscape paints a dramatic picture with glaciers carving the land, blue-white icebergs floating in the fjords, and lush green meadows and valleys leading to steep black mountain slopes.
As part of your holiday to Greenland why not treat yourself to something really special and visit the hot springs and bathe in water at 36 degrees centigrade. Whilst relaxing you can enjoy the views of the ice floes spread over the sea.

The ice flow is a phenomenon unique to South Greenland. Unlike an iceberg, ice floes are large sheets of frozen saltwater of up to three metres thick, which are constantly in motion.

And as well as the natural beauty of this land, a holiday in Greenland can also offer the ruins of churches and farms from over 500 years of Scandinavian settlements.
